Do you actually need a leave-in conditioner, and how is it different from a curl cream? Do you have to use both for great curls? These are common questions we get asked, so let’s break it down and help you understand what your hair actually needs.
Leave-In Conditioner vs. Curl Cream
Let’s start with a leave-in conditioner.
A leave-in conditioner is exactly what it sounds like: a conditioning product you don’t rinse out. It is water-based and designed to penetrate the cortex, the inside of the hair strand. It provides lasting moisture, helps reduce breakage, smooths frizz, adds slip for easier detangling, and preps the hair for styling.

The main difference between leave-in conditioner and curl cream comes down to texture and purpose. Leave-ins are lighter and more watery, designed to sink into the hair and hydrate from within. They don’t provide hold or curl definition.
Because of this, many curly hair textures benefit from using a leave-in conditioner as part of their routine, as long as it is the right type for their hair.

Curl Creams and Curl Enhancers
Curl Creams

Curl creams are styling products designed to define your curl pattern and can provide light hold.
In most cases, curl creams are thicker than leave-in conditioners. They are stylers, not just moisturizers, which is why they help shape and define curls rather than just hydrate them. Many curl creams are the reason you see those beautiful, juicy curl clumps on social media - the combination of defining, moisturizing, and hold ingredients help shape gorgeous curls.

Curl Enhancers

Curl enhancers (often labeled as curl activators, stimulators, or definers) are lighter than creams with many being more like serums or balms. These stylers help encourage your natural curl pattern. They’re moderately conditioning and often contain ingredients like magnesium sulfate, humectants, or proteins that help curls form more easily and look more defined.

Do You Actually Need Both?
It really comes down to your hair type and what your curls need.
You likely need BOTH a leave-in conditioner and a curl cream if:
-
Your hair feels dry or thirsty
-
You have high porosity hair that loses moisture quickly
-
Your curls need both moisture and definition
-
You have medium to coarse hair that handles layering well - this is key
-
Your hair is frizz-prone and lacks structure (in this case, we recommend at least one of your styling products has protein to improve curl retention)
You may only need LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER if:
-
Your hair is very fine and gets weighed down easily.
-
Your curls form naturally without much help
-
You prefer soft, lightweight, natural-looking curls
For very fine or easily weighed-down hair, you could also try lighter alternatives like Color Wow Curl Wow Flo-Etry Vital Natural Serum, which mimics the scalp’s natural oils and provides lightweight moisture and shine without buildup.
You may only need CURL CREAM or CURL ENHANCER if:
-
Your hair is already well-moisturized (e.g., you deep condition regularly)
-
Your leave-in feels like too much or causes buildup
-
You mainly want curl definition, not conditioning
One thing to be aware of is that not all brands use the same terminology. A curl cream from one may just be a moisturizer, whereas a leave-in conditioner from another may be a great definer. Read the bottles or descriptions closely to make sure you're getting the product you're looking for!
