Oils For Hair Growth: Do They Really Work?

Oils For Hair Growth: Do They Really Work?

Posted by Curl Warehouse on

While there is no magic product that will instantly grow or thicken your hair, certain ingredients have been shown to encourage growth, increase hair strength, and reduce breakage and thinning. They can also improve your scalp health which is a huge part of having gorgeous hair and beautiful curls.

Some of our top products to help support your scalp and hair include the Love Ur Curls Healthy Scalp Serum, Innersense Organic Beauty Hair Renew Scalp Oil, Curlsmith Full Lengths Density Elixir, and the Jessicurl Stimulating Scalp Massage Oil.

The key to getting the most out of these products (and not wasting your money!) is to use them properly.

Our Top Tips for Using Oils for Curly Hair Growth

  • Always follow the directions on a product, including how much to apply and how often. Overusing a product is not going to supercharge your results and could cause skin issues.

  • Don't skip scalp massages. They boost blood flow to your scalp, delivering oxygen and nutrients to your roots. When combined with the active ingredients in these products, regular scalp massages can support healthy hair growth. Remember to be gentle! Use only your fingertip pads, not your nails. If using a tool, apply light pressure and gently move it around; avoid dragging it through your hair.

  • If you have an oily scalp and are concerned about using oil after washing, or if you won't wash your hair for a few days, apply these oil-based products the night before your wash day. You can then rinse them off in the morning. Most are perfectly fine to sleep in, but again, be sure to check the directions.

  • If a product makes your hair or scalp feel oily, or oil is left on your fingertips even after massaging it into your scalp, you may be using too much! A couple of drops is usually all that is required for optimum results.

  • Don't neglect other aspects of scalp health in favour of a product that promises healthy growth. Wash regularly with a gentle shampoo (there are no awards for going as long as possible between washes!) and don't pull too tight when trying your hair back or up. Tight ponytails put pressure on the sensitive skin of your scalp and can lead to breakage and thinning, the exact opposite of what you may be trying to achieve.

Improving your hair and scalp health and encouraging healthy growth takes time and patience. Results don't happen over night, even with a great product.
