Routine Changes for Amazing Winter Curls

Routine Changes for Amazing Winter Curls

Posted by Lisa C. on

The days are getting shorter and everyone across Canada is experiencing cooler mornings and evenings.  Perhaps even some of us have had to turn the furnace on already!

What does this mean for your curly hair routine?  Below are some great tips to get you and your hair ready for winter!

  1. Use more conditioner, and use it more often.  Choose conditioners that are a bit heavier with oils and butters.  Don't overdo these if you have fine textured hair.  Rinse it fully or leave a little bit in. We recommend AG Hair Boost Conditioner or Hair Dance Intensive Hydrating Conditioner.

  2. Bring back your fave deep conditioner if you've cut back during the summer.  Two of the most popular with our customers are Curlsmith's Double Cream Deep Quencher and Ecoslay's Banana Cream Deep Conditioner.

  3. Wash your hair a bit more frequently, but use a gentle low poo or perhaps cowash.  This will help prevent your scalp and hair from getting too dry, especially if you're in a dry climate. Check out As I Am's Coconut Cowash or Curlsmith's Curl Quenching Conditioning Wash. If you have a dry or itchy scalp, you could try the As I Am Dry & Itchy Scalp Care Co-Wash instead.

  4. Lower the heat in your home in the evening.  Using forced air for long periods will be more drying on your hair.

  5. Use a hat lined with satin or silk if you're outside for long periods of time.

  6. Protect your hair at night. You can use a protective hair style, a pineapple with a scrunchie, or a satin pillowcase like this one from Live Curly or one from KITSCH.  This often means less work refreshing your curls on cold, dark mornings.

  7. Skip or reduce dry brushing.  Static is especially common in the winter!

  8. Put a humidifier in your bedroom and sleep with it on.  If you're prone to dry skin, this will help with that as well.

You certainly don’t have to do all of this as it is a big list.
